CHRISTCHURCH DENIED GAS AT NIGHT

CHRISTCHURCH, April 16. Until further notice Christchurcl will be witliout gas from 6 p.m. until 6 a.in. The restriction, which started this evening, was announeed by the Christchurch Gas Company this afternoon. " Circumstanees beyond the company 's control" was given as the reason for the restriction and the com pany's stateinent gave no indieation when the normal supply would be resumed. Mr. F. E. Graham, chairman of direetors of the company, said he was not prepai'ed to sav anything fur tlier. Asked when the supply would Ijo resumed, Mr. Graham said: "Resumf) tion will be as soon as is humanly possible." The secretarv 1 of the Christchurch Gasworkvtrs ' Union (Mr. W. H. Matlrison) visited the works this afternoon and did not liear of any stoppage of supply. The unfor,seen circumstanees were in no way eaused" by the union or the men, he said. Those persons who were listeiiing to tlie local broadcasting stations at 2.30 p.m. today received the lirst news of ihe restriction. Otlrer persons heard the news later in the afternOon but many did not know anything about the restriction and were ' mystified When their supply was eut down at 6 p.m.
