, y — SHANNON BRANCH REVIEWS ITS ACTIVITIES There was a good attendance at, Laurvig's Hall on Wednesday eVening when the Shannon -subecntre of the Red Cross Society held its first annual general meeting. The president, Mrs. J. A. Easton., welcomed members present and thanked the ladies of the committee for their co-operation during the year just ended. Mrs. J. A. Creagh presented the annual report, wh'ich was as foll0ws:J_"The year has been a very successful one considering the small membership, and we close with the finances of 'the subcentre in a satisfactory condition. The list' of subscribing members totals only 27 and the committee would be greatly encouraged to see more names on the list of members during the coming year. "During the year an enjoyable afternoon was held and the guests took part in competitions and a dainty afternoon tea was served by the committee. A very enlight•ening talk on Red Cross work was contributed by Miss ' Bowen, of the Levin ^branch of the society. The' proceeds of this fiinction amount-. ed to £2 11s 3d. A competition run during the year resulted in the sum of £7 18s being raised. To assist the food for Britain campaigm,' boxes were placed in shops in Shannon and Tokomaru for residents of the district to place donations of tins of food for Britain. Collections were made from time to time^from these boxes and during the year' 95 tins of food, 23 packets of soap and about 30 lbs. of fat were sent to Palmerston North, and were included in the cases of foo'd for Britain. Besides these, a box containing 49 packets of soap was handed in by the Shannon Women's Institute, and was forwarded to Palmerston North for dispatch. At . Christ-, mas time a box containing facecloths, hot water bag covers, ditty bags and knee caps made by the members, was sent to the patients at Awapuni Hospital. Jam and , eggs were also donated by members and a tin of , sweets was purchased and dispatched to Awapuni Hospital. -Greeting cards and small Christmas gifts went to residents of Shannon who were sick in hospital at that time. A number of packets of tea were donated to the society and these were distributed as Christmas gifts to several .elderly people^ "ThrmieTiont > the nast vear meet-
ings were hellT" on the second TUesday ofveach month and each one was interesting and enjoyable. The committee members knitted during the : afternoon and then enjoyed afternoon tea at the conelusion of the. meetings. The total number of subscribers to the Red Cross magazine number only seven. This is. a.very interesting and instructive magazine and the committee hopes to be able to report an increase in the number of subscribers next year. "The committee desires to convey its grateful thanks to Mr. F. Edmonds, who has very kindly audited the books, and to "The Chronicle" for assistance given. Thanks is also expressed to the residents of Shannon and the surrounding districts for their support." The balance sheet was then read by Mrs. Creagh and showed a credit balance of £14 5s 3d. Mrs. J. T. Bovis, in congratulatjng Mrs. Creagh on the full report on the year's work, stated that the society had endeavoured to carry out on a small scale some of the work outlined in the peacetime activity schedule. The main objective was to be prepared to give the neeessary assistance in any time of emergency and, therefore; it was neeessary to have a longer list of annual subscribers. that thosewho were already memoers would continue with .their support, and that more subscribing members would enrol during the coming year. The following officers were then elected: — President: Mrs. J. A. Easton; vice-president: Mrs. S. W. Barber; secretary-treasurer: held over, Mrs. Creagh acting until she leaves the district; committee: Mesdames J. T. Bovis, E. Chester, A. E. Burling, Wylie, Hateley, Rasmussen, J. Grifflths, J. D. Campbell and F. Edmonds; hon. auditor: Mr. F. Edmonds. ' It was decided to organise a clothes drive for clean and warm clothes for CORSO. The date set down for this was Saturday, May 3, and residents are to be asked to leave their parcels of clothes ready to be called for on that day.
