ECONOMIC CONSEQUENCES OF INFLATION
• WELLINGTON, April 11. "No country can keep on pursuing an inflationary policy and then expect to control the economic 'consequences of ' doing so by' passing laws,"- said Mr. H. E. Blyde, acting Dominion president of the Federated Farmers, commenting on a discussion on the Servieemen's Settlement and Land Saies Act at the legal conference. 4 ' Some people in New Zealand haye had the idea that we can control economic conditions hy legislation and withotjt regard to any action which we ourselves take. But we are beginning ;'to' flnd out that where statute law confliets with economic law "the temptation to the ordinary individual to break it is too great. 4 'Economic laws can no more be abrogated hy Act of Parliament than physiCal laws can, and if we really desire to help servicemen and to see that the errors. of settlement which occurred after the last war are avoided then we should stop pursuing an inflationary policy. This is the fair way and the honest way. I suggest that it is the way really to cope with the position. Attack the cause and don't try to treat the symptom."
