LATEST STEP TO MEET POWER SHORTAGE
WELLINGTON, April 10. The Government has- authorised the purchase of Diesel generating plants to the value of £170,000 and. is making inquiries as to possihle purchase eitber in United Kingdom or United States where it is understood certain plants are now availahle, said the Minister of Works (Mr. Semple) today, replying sto the statement hy the Auckland Chamber of Commerce regarding the availability of plant in the United StatesThe lviinister added that the plant was in comparatively small units and there■fore not altogetfter suitahle for cpnnection as part of the main supply system. The department had in view the use of some units on major construction jobs, and of others as standhy plants in positions -where the continuity oi supply was espeeiaily. important, said Mr. Semple. Some might also he suit ahle for installation in factories. As'.to the prqposal to use the generating units recently suhmerged at Hora hora the Minister said this had haen given very careful consideration before a decision was made not to attempt to saivage them. They were unsuitable for other than a water wh-eel drive.
