GERMAN WOOL MACHINES WILL BENEFIT DOMINION

(Special Correspondent.)

Jtteceivea Tnursuav, / p.m. 5 * LONDON, April 10. The necd for a well sujjplied. Londou spot market in wool is exemplified b.y the recentlv announced project for the JBritish eommercial utilisation of surplus Gennan wool machinery and the calJ it niade 011 impiediately availablo wool supplies. The scheme visualises the British conunercial production b.\ Gernian niachinery, of about 5000 tons of wool tops, a similar weight of wool yarn, and scveral million yards ,of wool clo'th, in the yeaf ending MarcJi. 1948. This is the output whereof tlic Gennan niachinery is capable after pro ducing enough for Gennan cloth'ing re quirements. The British wool process ing interests — functioning under u scheme operated hy the authorities — will supply Dominion wool for the pur pose. .The goods . will not belong to Germany but will remain British propertv- either for use at- hoiiie or in the British export trade. New Zealand's interest in the matter is that this -schepie will uftimately augment Britain's wool buying power bv some liundreds of thousands of bales and it will restore fiill running to Germany 's wool machinery much sooner than would otherwise have been pos sible. This addition'al- wool demand will not fall, on the Dominion and sliol uiarlcets /mmediately. British contracts to use this German machinery exteml until March, 1948, and wool buying fo: the purpose will depend on how quicld.v the German mills are read.y for it. Some are ready now but " full production upder the scheme will not be in pro gress for several monthsT Part of the wool rcquired will therefofe be a call on next season 's Dominion clips.
