FIRE BRIGADE CARNIVAL
NOW IN THIRD WEEK Although the Shannon Volunteer Fire Brigade carnival has commenced its third week of activity, it is still 'not possible to obtain any indication as to how the fina'ncial positions of the committees stand. Sworn to secrecy by their committees, the treasurers are undoubtedly good security men, as •information is harder to get tha'n money these days in Shannon. However, from the point of view of the casual observer, it seems possible that the ultimate aim of the carnival — that of providing the town with an efficient fire engine— will be achieved. All three committees are still working hard and quite a good line of entertainment is offering. Saturday's gala day will h&lp the cause along by about £100, while other successful functions were held over Easter. The following is a brief review of the activities of the committees: — Maori Committee On Monday evening the weekly 500 evening was conducted by the Womeri's Section of .the R.S.A. in Laurvig's Hall, and the proceeds handed over to the Maori committee. The attendance was very good considering the manv counterattractions. Prize-winners were Mesdames D. McLaggen and C. Parr. Minor prizes were won by Mrs. Sinclair and Mr. D. Harris. A competition conducted during the evening was also won by Mr. Harris. During the supper interval, Mr. V. J. Bateman, chairman of the Maori committee, extended thanks | to the public for their support and also thanked the ladies of the R.S.A. for again conducting the function, for the Maori Queen. Mr. Bateman announced that a special prize was being offered at next week's tournament. The big night on this committee's programme will be the Maori concert in the Druids' Hall this evening. An excellent array of talent has been obtained from both local and outside sources. The rehearsals have been most successful and it is expected that the hall will be filled to capacity. Town Committee The town committee, under the leadership of Mr. C. G. Wishart, has been very busy and a successful vice versa d&nce was held last Thursday evening, when the Druids' Hall was well filled. This committee has been unfoltunate in having bad weather conditions for m'oSt 'of '"its i Thkiif'® 'fdhctioils,' 1 but nevertheless, Thursday's novel dance was a function which will be remcmbered for some time by those who were present. Great was the array of strange "men" and "women" seen around the hall and on the dance floor. The committee held a very successful concert at Tokomaru on Tuesday evening and its card evening at Mangaore last 'night was a oonular function.
This committee will be holding its main event next Saturday afternoon and evening in the Druids' Hall, when a Paddy's Market will be the attraction. A baby competition and other events will comprise the aftemoon's programme, while in the evening the main attraction will be the tug-o-war championships. This is an open event and teams will be coming from Wellington and Marton. A novel feature of the evening will be a beautiful bashful baby contest, open to all male and females between the ages of seventeen and seventy. Special prizes will be presented.
Farmers' Committee Rumour has it that the Farmers' Queen is in the lead after the committee's most successful ball on Easter Monday evening. If not financially in the lead, this committee must certainly be the social leaders, as its function on Monday was without doubt one of the most popular events of the carnival. The hall,' which was artistically decorated for the occasion, carried a capacity crowd of the dancing public from all over the district. Cliff Anderson's or.chestra provided the music and the ladies of the committee were responsible for a delightful supper. Competitions were won by Messrs. E. Kay, T. R. Palmer and J. Alexander. Mr. Bert Coulter carried out the duties of' M.C. This committee will be holding a street day tomorrow.
