Received Thursday, 10,30 a.m. LONDON, April 9. • Three men broke into Melbury House, near Dorchster, the home of Lord and Lady Ilchester. They attacked and bound Lady Ilchester, who is over 70 and recovermg from a perious illness, and stole jewellery worth £2000. Lady Ilchester's world-fam- / ous string of black pearls, how- , , ever, was not stolen. 1 ( ] The thieves cut the telephone wires to the house before they broke in. One of them woke the Countess, shining a torch in her face. He de^ manded the keys to the safe, but she refused.' The three men then bopnd her with her stockings, and tied her arms to the bed rails. The Countess struggled with the bonds for two hours, and eventually loosened her hands and knocked on the wall to attract attention.
