j YvEELlNGTbN, Apni 8. There was a big advance in thrift luring the year ended March 31. More ;than 10,000 new national groiip savmgs accouuts have been opened in factories, ishops, ofiices and Government departnents This was revealcd today by Mr. iT. N. fclmallwood (chairman of the New Zealand National Eavings Committee), jwlio stated that the past year had been an outstauding one in respect of thrift jinuong wage earners. "\Ye aimed to reacli 10,000 new ] gronp accounts, but the total was actually 10,500," added Mr. Smallwood. j"In addition to these 8000 iudividual ^accounts have been opened, making a of 18,500 accounts for the year." This outstauding advance in new accounts has eontributed in no small measure to the excecdiug of the target of- -£6,000,000 set at the beginning of •the year. Our final returns are not yet available, but we know that this figure /ias been substantially exeeeded. All iparts of New Zealand have eontributed j to these excellent results, and it has by J no means been eonfined to the main Of the 335 quota districts int.o which New Zealand is divided, no fewer than 293 obtained their anuual jquotas. In some casse double, or even treble, the allotted quotas have been j obtained." The enthusiasm of organisers and jcommittee's was evidenced in the re|sults for the final week of the year, jwhen the highest total weekly quota ,success ever recorded — 318 out of 335 iudividual offic-es — was aeliieved, and in addition all 20 distriets exeeeded their weekly quotas. All of the towns in the Palmerston j North postal district were successful in I achieving their National Savingsj quotas during the past week. They were Palmerston North, Apiti, Ash- . liurst, Bulls, Dannevirke, Feilding, j -Foxton, Glen Orou^i, Halcombe, Kimbolton, Levin, Manakau, Ohau, Pahiatua, Pongaroa, Rangiotu, Rangiwahia, Rongotea, Sanson, Shannon, Tokomaru, Weber, Weraroa and Woodville.
