COMPLETE DISINTEGRATION OF HELIGOLAND
(Special Cofrcspondent.) Received Tuesday, 7.5 p.m. LONDON, April 8. "Wlien Ihe Dennan i'ortifieatioEs on Heligoland are blown up by the Ivoval Navy and R.A.F. on April 18, th.e explosion is expected to be so sev-ore that it rnay split the island. It will eertainly 1)0 reeorded on seismograph instruments as far .afield as Moscow, London and Ronie. For montlis past Naval and R.A.F. men have been loading underground tunnels under the island stronghold with explosives and when the charge is fired ITom a cable ship eight mile-s out at sea, the whole of tlie warship iiens, eoastal batt.eries and eight and a half miles of deep tunnels, are expected to disintegrate. A landing party which will examine the demoliti-ons will not go ashore for two days after the explosion. It is intended to make it inrpossible for the island ever again to be used as a fortified base.
