STILL "HOT" AFTER NINE MONTHS

Reeeived Monday, 9 p.m. NEW YORK, April 6. After nine monfclis' intensive r'esearch, Navy scientists are unable to find a sufficiently powerful decontaminating agent to render the vessels used in the July atom bomb tests at Bikini, safe I'rom radio activity, says the New York Herald-Tribune's Washington correspondent. The vessels cannot be manned nor can they be broken up for scrap foi* fear that the dangerous radio-active metai would find its way into diverse channels. The reason is that upwards of fifty fission products may be present aboard the ships and no decontamin- i ant has yet been found to deal with them all. All the radio-actiVe contamination was suffered as the result of the test in whiclFa bomb was exploded under water, throwing up a great column of water which fell on " the ships as rain or fog. Earlier t.ests in which the explo^ion occurred in midair, carried the fission products into the stratosphere. The contaminated ships are expected to be "hot" for a year or 18 months. Some are in quarantine on Ameriea 's Pacific coast. Others are at Pearl Harbour and other Pacific bases.
