AUCKLAND, April 7. The testing of the tirst 30,000 kilowatt umt at Karapiro began tonight. At 5.30 p.m. No. ] penstock intalce gate was raised a few inches and the penstock was allowed to fill in 18 minutes. Tests which . began about two hours latef were .stated to consisi of givipg the turbinO one or two slow turns to ensure that there were no serious faults of erection and then to speed the unit up not- under load and to run it for several hours. I|' all was well at this stage the unit qnight be run at speeds up to operatiori level of 167 revolutions a minute.
