. WELLINGTON, April 8. The death occurred at 6.30 a.m. today o'f the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, Miiiister of Supply. Mr. Sullivan, acting on miedical advice, 'entered Lewisham Hospital oh March 25 for observacion. * : Early last- week his conditi'on' was reported to' have shown an jmprovement, and on Sunday it was stated to be satisfactory. The late Mr/ Sullivan, who was 65 years of age, was born at Christchurch. He was educated at Marist Brothers' School there and afterwards became apprenticied to the furniture trade. - He then tr'avelled for several years, chiefly in Europe and Ameriea, and on his return entered journalism". From 1915 to 1920 he was on the staffa of the Sun and Times, Christchurch. . . As a youth Mr. Sullivan joined the Labour movement and became a member of the Christchurch Trades and Labour Council, of which he was a vice-president for three years. He v^as at one time president of the United Furniture Trades Federatioh and secretary of the Christchurch Furniture Trades Union. Mr. Sullivan had also been president of both the United Federation of Labour and the New Zealand Political Labour League, In 1915 Mr. Sullivan was elected to the Christchurch City Council continuing in office until 1931. when he defeated Mr. W. Hayward for the 'Maydraltv. Mr. Sullivan entered politics m 1919," defeating Mr. G. W. Russell for the Avon seiat after having' unsuccessfully contested the Riccarton seat in 1911 and Avon m 1914. In 1920' he was appointed Labour Whip. When the Labour Party came into power in 1935, Mr. Sullivan was appointed Minister of Industries and Commerce and Minister of Railways. Followmg the outbreak of war he became Minister of Supply in September, 1939, t oost which he held at the time of his death. Mr. Sullivan was acting Prime Minister during Mr. 'Fraser s n.hsence overseas. . •
