WELLINGTON, April 2. The removal of the Go.vernment subsid.y on sugar would cause a considerable increase in the retail price of choeolates, sweets and' factoiy manufaetured eakes, stated several Wellington confeetionery iirms today. The actnal increase would- not be known until a Price Tribunal ruling had been obtained, but it would probably be 30 to 50 per eent. of eurrent prices. The chocolate manufaeturing industry had been anxious for some time to obtain a price increase and this latest rise in costs would make it imperative. "The price of beer was unlikely to be affeeted by the rise in sugar costs," said a leading Wellington brewef. The appreciable rise in manufaeturing costs caused by the removal of the subsidy wonld be met, as had the increases in the costs of barley, malt, hops, tra'nsport and labour, ' by the industry. "Whether or not individual brewers deeided to ap.ply to the Price Tribunal for an increase in priee," he said, "will be a matter for their own considerations "
