LOCAL AND GENERAL
Flax to be Fostered The Manawatu was one of the pri'ncipal centres of the flax industry in which the Government had been taking a keen interest, approaching actual partnprship with private e'nterprise, commented the Minister of Works, Hon.- R. Semple, at Palmerston North taday. The plant was ample to meet the whole , woolpack requirements of the Dominion, but while the market was there the industry was operating at reduced strength because of manpower shortages in the factory and field. No spectacular movements were anticipated in the industry, but it met a local demand and deserved to be fostered up to the point at which the demand was fully satisfied. Land Settlement "The Lands and Survey Department, which has the responsibility of providing farms for ex-service men, looks to the Manawatu and Wairarapa districts to provide 250 and 350 farming units respectively," said Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Works, speaking in Palmerston North today. "The Native Department will be looking to the interests of the native people in this area," added the Minister. "Their proposals include the development of the Himatangi block, an. area of about 10,000 acres, access to which will permit the establishment of many more families on dairy farms with a probable sixfold increase in production."
