EXCELLENT SUPPORT

CARNIYAL IN SECOND WEEK With the Shannon Volunteer Fire Brigade's efueen carnival now in its second week, 'all cpmmittees report favourably on the -supporj. given them by the public of Shannon and district. Although it is not possible to give a progress report at the moment, as the committees seem content .to keep their financial positions a secret, it is expected that the amount collected is somewhere in • the vicinity of what was expected to be raised during the opening week. Summing up the first week's activities, it can safely be said that none of the committees have yet held their really big attraction. The combined gala day on Saturday next should be one of the major events of the carnival, and it is expected, provided favourable weather conditions prevail, that visitors will be present from all parts of the district, as well as from Palmerston North and the Wairarapa. An excellent programme has been arranged by the committee, and these crazy events for the crazy sports, as well as the marching displays, should provide a delightful day of entertainment. A brief outline of the activities tf the various committees is as follows: — Maori Committee On Monday evening the Maori committee held a special screening at the Renown Theatre, when a large gathering witnessed two films kindly supplied by the man- | a.gement of the theatre. "On the I same evening the Women 's section I of the R.S.A. held a card evening j for the committee in Laurvig's Hall. The attendance was good and a very attractive list of prizes was offered, the winners being Mrs. E. Thorne and Mr. J. Sinclair. Futfure arrangements in hand by this committee include a shop day tomorrow afternoon and a Maori concert on Thursday, April 10, in the Druids' Hall. Farmers' Committee ! The Farmers' Committee has j been hard at work and on Monday evening a successful novelty dance was held in the Moutoa Hall. The attendance was good and all enjoyed dancing to the music of Billy Larkin's orchestra. A number of novelty dances were held and many prizes which had been donated were handed out to the lucky winners. The committee will be holding a card evening at Mangaore this evening, and its usual shop will be open again tomorrow in Mr. Graham's buildings, Ballance Street. ' The big night for the farmers i will be on Easter Monday,- when ; they will be holding their ball in jthe Druids' Hall. Music is being provided by Cliff Anderson's orchestra and there is every promI ise of this function being an outi standing success. i Town Committee - The Town Committee has started the week quietly, being more or I less content to concentrate its j activities to the major offensive to- ; morrow evening, when a "vice ! versa" dance will be held in the ! Druids' Hall. This function is the I committee's big night for the week and should be quite a successful dance. Music is by a Leven orchestra. On Tuesday evening a concert is being arranged at Tokomaru and on Wednesday afternoon a beetle afternoon is being held in Laurvig's Hall. The usual card evening will be held by the committee at Mangaore on Wednesday night. Transport will be available to those wishing to make the trip from Shannon.
