THE PLAN IN DETAIL

The list of works in the scheme of development for the Horowhenua district included the following: — Land Development Sand dune reclamation: Coastal strips between Hokio and the Manawatu and Rangitikei Rivers. Manawatu River: Flood control in the lower basin by means of cuts, spillways, stop banks, fiood gates, etc. . - Mangaone and Kawau Streams: Impro vements in co-operation with Pairnerston North City, Manawatu Drainage Board and Kairanga County Council. Tokomaru Stream: Channel improvements and stop banking in the Makerua district: Ohau River: Channel improvements and stop banking in the Ohau district. Waikawa and Manakau Streams: Straightening and stop bankingflood control between Levin and Otaki. Ooaki River: Flood control; exca- ^ vation of new channel from Otaki Bridge to the sea, stop banking and bank protection. Swamp drainage: Improvements in Buckley, Moutoa, Makerua, Manawatu and Sluggish River Drainage districts. P. and T. Facilities Levin: New post office building and temporary telephone exchange building. Otaki: New post office building and store-garage building. Himatangi : Establishment of new transmitting and receiving radio station.

State Highways Levin ^ -Wanganui: Major deviations between Levin and Manawatu River, widening and sealing between deviations, renewal of two bridges south of Sanson and completion of Rangitikei River Bridge at Bulls. Levin-Paekakariki : Replacement of Otaki River Bridge, renewal of Ohau Overbridge and Ohau River Bridge and reconstruction -of LevinWaikanae section of road. Main Highways Levin-Palmerston North: Reaiignment of two-mile section two miles south of Shannon, widen and improve Levin-Shannon section for s.even miles and widen and improve two miles in the Horowhenua County. Shannon - Foxton: Reconstruet and seal seven miles. Roads and Streets Horowhenua County : Replacement of Manawatu River Bridge at Rangitane. Miscellaneous roading improvements and renewal of • minor bridges. Railways and Airways Railways: Duplication of line between Otaki and Manakau, and between Levin and Koputaroa. Airways: Improvements at Levin and Feilding. Provision of fields for local bodies and aero clubS for private and club ftying as required chroughout the two regions. Utilities Horowhenua County: Waikanae water supply in coilaboration with Hutt County. Levin Borough: Installation of sewerage system. . Horowhenua Power Board: Mangahao-Levin transmission line and sub-station and transformers at Levin; new office building and showroom at Levin. Housing Horowhenua County : Housing scheme. # State housing: Development of d' sites -and erection of houses throughout the regions to meet the proved demand. Native -housing: Erection of houses and improvements to substandard Maori dwellings; provision of rental houses in larger towns. Social and Cultural Mental Hospitals Department: Additions and alterations to Levin Farm Hospital, Kimberley Road. Palmerston North Hospital Board: New maternity hospitals at Levin and Foxton; alterations and improvements , at Otaki Sanatorium; Western Districts' Sanatorium, participation in a scheme for the provision of a sanatorioum to serve districts as far north as Taumarunui.
