NEW COASTAL ROAD PLANNED
(Special to "Chronicle")
PAEKAKARIKI TO FOXTON s ^
PALMERSTON NORTH, April 2. "The State highways, which generally include all routes carrying traffic right through the districts, are in this area generally up to standard and in good condition, in spite of war-time difficulties," said the Minister of Works, Hon. R. Semple, outlining the ten-year development plan for the district in Palmerston North today. "On most of them, however, thcre are 'sections which the Main Highways Bcard feels should be improved to higher standards." The most interesting of these, sontinued the Minister, would be the improvement over its whole length of the Palmerston-Sanson nighway, and the projected coastal motorway from Paekakariki to Foxton. "The latter will avoid lengthy sections 011 swamp foundations, as well as the built-up areas that line he existing highway. New settlements along the coastal strip will be tapped at reasonable intervals, but generally this route will be designed for fast through traffic."
