HOROWHENUA ELEVEN BEATEN
game with southern hawke's bay On; Saturday last the Horowhenua representative cricket eleven journeyed to Pahiatua to piay Southern Hawke's Bay for the Goldfrnch and Cousins' Cup, which the latter were successful in retainihg. On arrival the players were weicomed by the Mayor of Pahiatua, and by the townspeople, a*nd greatyinterest was shown in the match. '"The ground was -in excellent order. Rice lost the toss for Horowhenua and Southern Hawke'S Bay opened the batting on a perfect wicket. The flrst pair, Anderson and Eriekson, put on 80 runs oefore Eriekson edged one from Hudson to Rice in siips. Anderson went on to compile a sound 64 before being bowied by Saunders. At lunch, with five wickets down for 134. the home side was beginning to lose its advantage, but the tail-enders added further runs to bring the total to 211. Saunders bowied well for his five wickets and Lynch looked dangerous for five or six overs. The brunt of the attack was taken by Hudson and De Castro. Horowhenua's opening pair, Andrews and Hudson, were together at tea, but only 30 runs had been seored in 40 minutes and it was decided to take risks in, an endeavour to force a win in the short time remaining. Southern Hawke's Bay countered this move by bowling Southee and Jenson, whose • fast deliveries were too accurate to allow this to succeed. At one stage it looked as though Rice and Dustin might place the side in a winning position, but in forcing the pace Rice was very harrowly run out after batting with great confidence. The rest of the team carried on the forcing tactics, but the bowling was too good and the side was all out for 113. Details are as follows: — SOUTHERN HAWKE'S BAY
