BUCKLEY GOLF CLUB

SUCCESSFUL OPENING The Buckley Golf. Club opened its activities . for 1947 • on Saturday afternoon, when ideal weather eonditions prevailed.' .In spite of che number of counter-atnacoiom in the district, there was a good gathering of members and visitors from neighbouring. clubs. , A number of new players, who were trying cheir hand at., golf for the first ttme were on the links. During the afternoon a Canadian mixed foursome was played over nine holes,- the. winners being J. Bell and Mrs. Rasmussen. . In officially opening the season, the president (Mr. R. S. Downes) extended a welcome to the visitors and new players, .and stated that he was very pleased to see so many of the old faces back on the links again. He hoped that those present had spent an, enjoyable summer, and had been successful in the various summer sports, md ne felt sure that now the golf season was opening, they were looking for ward, as all golfers did, to a successful season on the links. Mr. Downes stated that he was very pleased to see such a large gathering present in spite of the many counter-attractions throughout th'e district. The president extended his sincere thanks and the thanks of the club to Messrs Stern Bros. for the use of their property once again, and also for the amount of hard work they had put in over the past few weeks "to make the links in. such a good playing condition.

In declaring the- season officially open, Mr. Downes wished all present an enjoyable afternoon's golf. A notable feature on Saturday afternoon was the number of ladies present, and the prospects for a strong ladies' club for the coming season looks very favourable. The links are in good condition, but rain would improve the greens considerably. However, it is expected that before the season has progressed very far the links should be in very good playing order. Sunday Afternoon's Play There was a godd gathering on the links on Sunday afternoon, when a stroke competition was held. Some fourteen players handed m their cards,* and " the scores were as follows:— H. Mabey 70 W. Stern 77, J. Mabey 69," J. Stern 66H. Stern. 74,. K. 'Thomson 70, C Booker 69, C. Stefft. 72, V.
