The favourite, Prince Regent, finished fourth. There was a stunned silence over the huge crowd as the IrisE horse, Caughoo, whicli was bought as an unbroken two-year-old for £50, ridden by a jockey who had never becn over the course, wron with extraordinary ease. It was one of the most remarkable Nationals ever run. Prince Regent made a bril liant effort but weiglit told. The owners at the last minute with drew last year's winner, Lovely Cottage, because the track was too heavy. Rain fell heavily and the crowd, which exceeded the 1946 record of a quarter of a million, saw little of the race. The prize for this year's was over £12,000.
