Evelyn Keyes, who is. winning much acclaim from critics and public for her work i'n the feminine lead of "The Jolson Story," opposite Larry Park, had the option in hfer term contract lifted by Columbia Studio. Jchn Kellogg, who made his debut in an important supporting role to Dick Powell and Evelyn Keyes in "Johnny O'cloek," had the option in his long-term contract taken up by his studio. His next role will be the second lead to Dick in "The Thirteenth Hour." Because of his work in "The Thrill of Brazill" Sid Tomack, comic, has been signed up for a term-contract by Columbia. He has been given as his next aSsignment the only comeay role in the GU.nn Ford-Janis Carter starrer "Fi amed," now before the cameras under the direction of Richard Wallace. Vernon Cansino, younger brother of Columbia star, Rita Hayworth, will make his debut as an actor in a dramatic- role "The Last of the Redmefn," being produced by Sam Katzman for Columbia. He was signed for a part in the feature which stars Jon Hall and Michael O'Sliea. Gail Patrick has heen allotted the leading feminine. role opposite Preston Foster in Columbia's big outdoor feature, "Ki'ng of the Wild Horses," which is to go into production shortly. Miss Patrick's last previous picture was "Claudia and David" for 20th Century-Fox. Grant Withers has a featured( role in the Randolph Scott-Barbara Britton starrer "Twin Sombreros," to be jjroduced by Harry J oe Brown. Withers rece'ntly eompleted an ■ important role in "My Darling Clementine," for 20th Century-Fox. "Twin Sombreros" is based on Zane Grey's last novel. Kathleen Ryan, the 23-year-old Irish redhead, who has not yet been seen in New Zealand, has been working opposite Stewart Granger in "Captain Boycott," for Pinewood Studios, England. Kathleen almost stayed -"unknown" because she thought an offer to play opposite James Mason in "Odd Man Out" was a practical Joke! So weli did she perform her part in that fllm that she is now in demand. Richard Bcnedict has been cast as the one-legged skid-row bouneer in "The Guilt of Janet Ames," starring Rosalind Russell and Melvyn Douglas, and directed by Gharies. Vidor. A former protege of Elid: Kazan, Benedlct played second: male.^eads in and "A Walk in the Sun" and r'eturns to Paramount after- his 'Columbia chore for "The Big Haircut." Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison nave begun work on their-new film, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir," which is dne of today's most 'popular novels. Gene seems destined to make popular hovels more popular ha the screen. So far she has been n "A Bell for Adano," "Dragonwyck," and "Leave Her to Heaven," xll in two yoars. Her most .mportant best-seller role, of jourse, is in Darryl Zanuck's new nlm,"The Razor's Edge." In "Calcutta," a mystery-drama, lo-starring Alan Ladd and Gail Russell, emerges the most authenic picture ever made with an .'ndian background, the credit belonging to John Farrow, the director. When he began the assignment Farrow said: "The one ihing I want to do in this picture is to get the fiavour. of the real India, not that Arabian Nights stuif that is usually seen. For once, I would like to have the audiences see India as it really is."
