ABUSE OF ELECTRIC BATTERIES

ROTORUA, March 28. The District Electricity Controller (Mr. H. R. Beale) stated today that it had come to his notice that many per sons in Rotorua had purehased batteries for lighting and that these had been charged directly from current when the power was on. One retailer states that he had sold 110 batteries in the last few days. Mr. BealC stated that such use of batteries whs not only a breaeh of the • legal requirements of the regulations but also an abuse of the spirit, fiind that this was lilcely to be the cause of further restrictions to be imposed. Anyone offending m this respect in future would be proseeuted iinmediately. The prohibition does not affect people using batteries charged by other means, but for this use a permit is required. Business coneerns generating their own power, however, do not recjuire a permit.
