HEAVY POWER CUTS MADE IN AUCKLAND

AUCKLAND, March 21. With the implemeutation of the Waitemata Electric Powpr Board's 111 creased schedule of power cuts at noon today and the decision by the Auckland board to bring stringent restrictions •into force from midnight on Sunday the electricity shortage has assumed more serious proportions for consumers. The board's actions follow the Gov ernment order for all power authorities in the Nortli Island to reduce their weekly unit consumption by 20 per cent. on the quota for the vear. The Auckland board waited until it received an official copy of the order before it announced its new schedule for next. week. From midnight ' on Sunday most of the Auckland board's areas will suffer restrictidns for a total of four and a half hourg, a day and..i.n„.t.he city power will be off from 1 a.m. to 2 a.m., 3 p.ni. to 5.30 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. This does not apply to the tram service which is on a separate supply system. Picture theatres in the Auckland board's area will not be affected al night. Iildustries at New Lynn are feeling the effect of the Waitemata board's cuts. The general manager (Mr. A. Main) said the most iinortant industry affected was dairying, and there were more than 3000 electrilicd dairy sheds in the district.
