FORTNIGHTLY MEETING The fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borotigh Councii was heicl on Tuesday evening." The Mayor (Mr. R.- E. Downes) presided and also present -were Crs. R.. R. Lind, J. A. Roach, H. Aitchison, J. Curran, E. Perry, C.-* G, Wishart and H. Norris. An apology from Cr. W. C. Higgie was received. The borough foreman, Mr. • jp. Haley was also present.
A letter was. received from the' Manawata . Gatchment Board regarding the taking of metal from che Mangahao' Stream. The Mayor pointed out that the communication did not apply to the council, as it did not obtain metal from this source. A further letter from the Catchment Board advised that it was endeavouring to obtain, through Order-in-Council, authority to take ovef all water-courses in its area. In reply to a question asked by the Mayor as to whether that would apply to Stansell's Drain and the Mangahao Creek, Cr. Lind
advised that under the Act the Catchment Board would be empowered to take over all water-courses, but in some cases the board would revert control-.back to the local authority. Regarding the Mangahao Stream, Cr. Lind stated that someone would have to take it over very soon as there was much erosion taking place between Mangaore and Shannon. It was decided ohat the council had no objection regarding the move. A circular letter received from the Health Department concerning the payment to health officers was held over unil the next meeting to enable the opinions of other local bodies to be obtained. The secretary of the Shannon Plunket Society wrote extending a welcome to the Mayor and Councillors as members of the society, and thanking them for their subscriptions. Cr. Lind reported that he had inspected suitable water pipe while in Wellington and had purchased, on behalf of the Council, some 40u feet of pipe, together with fittirigs, from the War Assets Realisation Board. • r -
Cr. Lind also reported that he had carried out ap inspection of the Vance Street drain, together with the persons • who had made the complaint, and -found that the drain required deepening by about one foot. A price had been received for completing the work, and it was decided by the- • 'council that the work be' compl'eted. ■ A committfee comprising the Mayor, Crs. 'H. Aitchison, R. R. Lind and the town clerk (Mr. Bovis) was set up to go into conference with Dr. Milr'oy Wilson regarding the problem of providing a suitable doctor's residence and • consulting rooms in 'the towh. Cr. Roach reported on the condition ■ ot the conveniences at the domain, and it was decided that Crs. Roach and Aitchison have authority to carry out improvements in this direction. Cr. Wishart stated that he had received a complaint regarding the ' low water pressure in the Grey Street area. To this, and a request from Cr. Norris regarding the formation of a footpath in Grey Street, the Mayor advised that both were on the 'Schedule of work to be carried out by the works committee. Accounts amounting to £376 4s 4d were passed for payment.
