NO INCREASE IN EGGS FOR MARKET THIS YEAR

-Frsss Association

By Teler,""ph—

WELLINGTON, March 20. After considering the effects of the present fowl-feed situation the, Postwar Egg Marketing Committee is of opinion that no greater quantities oi eggs will be available this year and it recommends that egg rationing be con tinued. This information (contained in a report which the committee niade to the Mihister of Agriculture) was given this morning to the Dominion conference of registered poultry keepers. Be cause of the feed. shortage the commit-

tee recommends that in the interests ot consumers some form of subsidy should be eontinued and egg rationing be continued in tinies of shortage. The committee suggests a guaranteeu ■ minimum and a fixed maximum pric-; with fiexibility for fixing prices between these two iioints as the best method in the meantime for .returning to the produeer a proper cost of production. It reeommeuds that control of egg marketing should be vested in a representative body consisting of four members elected by the poultry indus try and four to represent tlie Govern ment and consumers and with powers to appoint its own chairman who would not have a easting vote. The committee favoured the estab lishment in the heavv egg-production areas of cool store facilities for thu provision of an all-the-ycar-roun) supplv of shell eggs. It also recommended that attention be given to modern pulping operations and that eggs in the shell should not be iniported unless supjilios of eggs were totally inadequate. The Director of Internal Marketing (Mr. P. Fraser) explained that the committee had been set up to cvolve an alternative marketing plan to the wartime egg-marketing emergencv regulations. "The committee did not have sufficient evidenee to say that the production of eggs has gone (lown or remained the same," said Mr. Fraser, "but there is no evidenee to show that the quantity of eggs being utilis'ed hds gone down.
