Opening Day of Manawatu Meeting
( SPECIAL — FROM L.M.M.) WELLINGTON, This Day. With prospects of the Awapuni course being firm for tomorrow's opening of the Manawatu Club's autumn meeting, Trentham form last week might prove reliable to follow there. However, a number of horses which ran prominently at Trentham would be seen to much better advantage tomorrow if there was an easing in the track. • Although there are only f our starters in the Awapuni Gold Cup, it is expected that the race will develop into a duel between Bruce and Beau le Havre. General opinion is that Beau le Havre will have it on Bruce at weight-for-age, but with L. J. Ellis, his trainer, in the saddle I am prepared to see Bruce hoia the upper hand. It certainly • will be a keen tussle between this pair, especially if it is a true run race. The shorter distance of the Tamatete Handicap should suit Flying Ace, who ran two excellent races at Trentham, the distances being just beyond him. Arco's good second to Broiefield will cause him to be the prime public fancy. Solid performances can also be expected from Gay Stroller, Stony Broke, Night Foe, Merry Robin and Swift Quarry. In the sprint, the Johnston Memorial, Opulent should prove a solid proposition. Other prospects are Fort Royal, Dymondy, Argumentative, Lowry Bay, Theiolyn and Trig Point. Taking a line through his splendid effort to snatch third from Derene in the Suburban Handicap at Trentham last Saturday, Trig Point reads a good lightweight prospect. Other meetings, prospects for which are on this page, are Oamaru and Metropolitan Trots.. Prospects are: —
11.15— Karere Hurdles (13 furlongs) — Ruling Master, Roto Parera, Foreign Coin. 12.0 — Stonyhurst Handicap (6 furlongs) — Shiraz, Gay Tide, Night, Ops. 12.45 — Woodhey Hack (7 furlongs) — First division — Playtos, Ngatoki. Second division— Broilyn, Cincture. 1.30 — Awapuni Gold Cup (14 miles) — Bruce, Beau le Havre. 2.15— Sires' Produce Sfakes (7 furlongs) — Lady Christine, Pelias, Great Trek. 3.0 — Tamatete Handicap (1-4 • miles) — Arco, Flying Ace, Gay Stroller. 3.45 — Johnston Memorial (7 furlongs) — Opulent, Trig Point. 4.30 — Te Matai Hack (9 furlongs) — Sheilwyn, Selas, Blue Moon.
