OTAKI CHINESE IN TROUBLE
CHARGE OF FALSE PRETENCES At the Otaki Court on Thursday a Chinaman, Tsing Hing Chee, a market gardener, of Manakau, was charged that with intent to defraud he did obtain from Kelvin Bryan Stocker, of Wellington, the sum of £310 in money by falsely representing that a car was his own property, and was free and unemcumbered. Detective L. Smith, with Constable W. Calwell, prosecuted, whiie Mr. B. H. Rhodes represented the accused. Messrs. Nicolson and McBeth, J's.P., presided. Evidence was given by Fred Derek Knight, Robert William Pierson, Kelvin Bryan Stoker and , Detective Smith. 1 Detective Smith stated that he had interviewed the accused, who was quite frank on the matter. He appeared intelligent, and tmderstood the English language well. ' He made a statement that he had sold his car on which there was a debt. Pierson gave evidence to the effect that acCused owed his firm money, while Stocker, a salesman, also detailed dealings that he had with the accused. Mr. Rhodes pleaded guilty on behalf of his client on technical grounds, after which .Chee • was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence, bail being fixed at £100 (self) and one surety of £100 Accused will appear at Wellington on April 1 at 10 a.m. It was stated that Chee was a married man, 39 years of age, with ten children.
