Maori Language Neglected The Maori language was not sufficiently appreciated by New Zealanders, said the Mayor of Wellington, Mr. Appleton, when farewelling the singer, Inia Te Wiata, in the Town Hall. The Mayor aroused applause from the large audience when he said: "I have long been of the opinion that Maori should be made a compulsory subject in connection with our higher education." When the American forces were in New Zealand, he continued, they bought up all available Maori gramophone records. Therefore, he thought the time had arrived when that deficiency should be made good, and he suggested that the singer should make recordings before he left the country.
