STREET IMPROVEMENTS URGED PETITION TO COUNCIL A petition from residents in George Street askfng that improve.nents be made to their streeo. ano nat a name nlate be erected, was •eceived 'at the monthlv meetv~~ of the Levin Borough Council on Monday night. The letter nomted ou that the surface of the road was in very poor repair and a footpath was badly needed. The presen condition of the street was such that the -residents, many elderly, rere findinp- p-reat difficulty in coming to and from thelr homes. While expressing sympathy with the residents of the street, Cr. H. E. Bowen said it should be remembered that the council had many other urgent commitments. Some streets in Levin had been waitfng 20 years or footpaths. The Mayor, Mr. Burdekin, said fchat the street in question was one of those which would have received attention had the loan proposal gone through, and until such a loan was approved it was impossible for anything to be done on a large scale. The council was not in a position to carry out such improvemcnts out of revenue. If was suggested by sevefal-coun-cillors that a grader could be employed to make a reasonable "ootpath, which could be topdressed. It was agreed that- -nothing, oh a large scale could be nempted. The matter was veferred to the works committee, with the suggestion that it investi-, °ate the position. It was atrreed' that a name piate be erecled arequested.
