PUBLIC SHOULD BE TOLD EVERYTHING

i AUCKLAND, Mar. 17. i An assxirance that represeixtations would be made fo the Government by

requesting that a statement be issued to the public acquainting the people with the seriousness of the power position, was given by local Members of Parliament who met representatives, of the Manufacturers' Association in the olfi.ee of the Mayor, Mr. J. A. C. Allum. The meeting was called in order that the present power supply question might be discussed and in order that members of the association. might make requests to Members. - In opening the* meeting, the Mayor said recriminations were useless. The public was entitled to know the true position and when relief was likely. They were also entitled to knoiv what each seetion of the commuhity was to do in order to conserve electricity and he considered there should be no fur ther unannouneed cutting of power as was experienced on Saturday night. If power was to.be cut he was sure all sections would cooperate, but the Government should take the public into its conlxdence and issue a statement oji the exadt position. Mr. W. T. Anderton, M.P., said the shortage of power was due to lack of rain and the Government asked for t«he full cooperation of all people. The problein would only be relieved wheix rain fell. Members of the meeting concurred with the Mayor that what was wanted were restrictions which would inxpose the least inconvenience with the best results. The public generally did not appreciate that a major crisis was imminent, but they should be fully inforined. Mr. Irwin Crookes said the Auckland Electric Power Board was reconxnxending that iii a new power control order provision should be made for the coinplete cutting-off of donxestic hot-water services and their being se.aled. This was only to be done as the last resort and would exclude hospitals and others proving special circumstances. A reduction in street and shop lighting was also being considei'ed. (
