MAKING GREATEST AIRPORT IN AUSTRALIA
Received Wednesday, 8.30 p.m. CANBERRA, March 12. More than £11,000,000 is to be spent by the Government in converting Kingsford Smith airport at Mascot, Syilney, into the greatest in Australia. About £5,000,000 will be used in im proving the existing landing ground and facilitieS and the balanee in mak ing a flying-boat base in Botany Bay adjoining the drome. The resulting airport will be recognised as the Australian terminus for all major international air services opera ting between America, England, the East and Australia. The Civil 'Aviatioh Department plans the provisipn of an all-weather landing ground with latest flying aids, up to date aceopimo4atiOn for passengers, and es tablished branches of tlie Customs and Health Departments. It is intended that the passengers ' meilical examination and inspectiou of baggage will be carried out on a basis that will reduce delays to a minimum. The air links which the Government proposes to es tablish with New Caledonia, New Heb rides and the Solomdns, may have their first point of contact with Australia ai Eagle Farm, Brisbane.
