Championship Bowling The Manawatu Bowling Centre's championships were played at Palmerston North on Saturday. in the Champion of Champion Fours a rink from the Levin Club, compriSing Hughes, Meads, Burnham and Wenham (s) won a place in the semi-finals to be played next Saturday, followed by the final. A Levin Central rink skipped by Hayes was eliminated in the first round. Living in Railway Carriage The technical staff of the Williamson Opera Gompany, in the present shortage of hotel accommodation, are living in a railway carriage parked in ;the goods yard at Dunedin. The carriage is an old open-platform . type with seats removed. One secti'on has been converted into a kitchen. It is understood the men are using the carriage for the whole of the southern tour. Helicopter Over Petone Somewhat of a sensation, which attracted a large crowd, was caused by the landing on the Petone recreation ground on Saturday of one of the special helicopters oi Admiral Byrd's Antarctic fleet. The plane, which circled the Hutt Valley flying low, is .fitted with special runners for ice landing but these did not at all incommode the plane in its landing or take-oft from the recreation ground. Levin's Quota Exceeded A survey of last.week's activities in connection with National Savings shows that deposits totalling £5651 4s were received at the 24 "quota" towns in the Palmerston North district, thiS amoUnt being again considerably in excess of the .district weekiy .-. quota .. of £3551. Feilding, with a very "fine effort, headed the list, -£2264 6s being received. Palmerston North contributed £1928 9s ld, while Levin's £954 8s was well in excess of that town's quota. Twenty-three towns were credited with a weekiy quota success, Manakau being the only place failing to qualify.Woman Bitten by Snake In Crown Street, one of the most thickly populated parts of Sydney, a woman was bitten by a deadly copper-head snake. She was rushed to hospital where doctors injected a serum to counteract the effects of the vernon. The woman, who has now fully recovered, said that she was leaving a house in the dark when she trod On something soft, and felt a pain in her left leg just above the 'ankle. The snake coiled and struck at a man whc came to her rescue, but was quickly killed. It is thought that the snake, which is one of the most dangerous species in Australia, was carried into the city in a load- of fodder or fruit. Truck Driver Injured About* midnight on Friday a Tararua Electric Power Boara faultman, Mr. K. Murray, was driving a truck to Balance to attend a job and when about 15 yards from a concrete bridge near the Tararua factory, a back tyre on the vehicle blew out, causing it to serve viblently and career over the bank. Mr. Murray was penned inside the cab of the truck, which finally came to rest with its Wheels Up the bank. In the crash his hand was thrust through the windscreen, a number of the tendons being severed. Weakened from loss o.f blOod, Mrd Murray at last managed to leave the cab, the door of Whi-h had jammed by the impact.
