WOMEN'S BASEBALL

CH AMPION SHIPS COMMENCE The opening day of the New Zealand Wojnen's ■ Inter-provincial Baseball Championships at the Sportsground, Palmerston North, yesterday, proved full of surprises but with, Manawatu and Canterbury the two teams still remaining unbeaten. The highlight of fhe day's p.lay was .an exciting and closely contested match between the holders of the . senior title, Manawatu, and a fresh young- team from Otago. " It .was a hard and tight game from the word go wi^h botli teams on edge, this last being responsible for some fumbling in the field and on the bases. - The teams which so far are unbeaten are: Canterbury and Manawatu, in the senior grade; Manawatu and Horowhenua in the senior B grade; Manawatu in the junior grade. The results of yesterday 's play were as follow:— Senior. Canterbury bea't Southland 20 — 11. Manawatu beat Otago 6—4. Canterbury beat Otago 8 — 4. Manawatu beat Southland 19 — 0. Senior B. Manawatu beat Canterbury 11 — 7. Horowhenua beat Canterbury 9 — 7. Junior. Manawatu beat Horowhenua 20 — 11. The ofiicial opening of the championships began with a grand march past by all the teams taking part in the contest. Halting in front of the grand stand the players were addressed by the Mayor of Palmerston North, Mr. A. E. Mansford, and also by Mr. C. Buclcett, p'resident of the New Zealand Women 's Baseball Association, Mr. A. Rennie, acting secretary of the national association, and also secretary of the New Zealand Women 's Baseball Umpires' Association, and Mr. G. E'. Nicholl, president of the Manawatu Association. The games to take place today are: Senior, Manawatu v. Canterbury, Southland v. Otago, Manawatu v. Southland, Canterbury v. Otago. Senior B, Manawatu v. Horowhenua, Manawatu v. Canterbury.
