HAMMOND RETIRES.
Received Tuesday, 12.15 p.m. LONDON, March 10. Hammond, England's cricket captain since 1938, has announeed his retire ment owing to pressure of business but he added that he would p'lay for Cou'nty when he had the opportunity. Hammond, before he went to Australia, made up his mind to retire after the tour, so the decision is not a surprise. Hammond 's statement, issued in London says: " Pressure of business will in future prevent nty playing first elass cricket regularly as I. have done in the past. In the best interestS of the game I have therefore decided to retire from international cricket after my return from the present tour of Australia and New Zealand. " ° 1.1 r. H. A. Henson, Gloucestershire secretarv, said the club 's committee recorded tlieir thanks to Hammond for his loyaltv and consideration" of the best interests of the club during his distin^uished career of 27 years. Mr. Henson announeed the appointment of B. O. Allen to the club's captaincy in succession to Mr. Hammond.
