Sage King Narrowly Beats Voltaic and Imperial
Bruce won the Autumn Handieap pointlessly at Trentham on Saturday and his linishing run will long be reruembered by.&ll who saw it. Bruce carried the steadier of 9.11 but he was sent out a shdrt-priced favourite. When, over a' furlong from KO nie, Bruce, lying about sixth,. was given a' crack of the whip, it looited' as if his ■ weight was going to proVe too'much for him. It was demonstra'ted later that it was a (inal reminder from L. J. Ellis to Bruce that the "acid test" was to be applied. Bruce started to gallop aud he won going away by a short length f'iom the Hastings trained mare, Sakuntala, which was a short neek in front of Langue d'Or, whose iighting run was solid rather than brilliant. Elying Ace made the most of the [jace and passing the mile he was going vvell four lengths clear of Dink's Own alread of Night Foe, Royal Victor and Langue d'Or, Carnforth, Arco, Broiclleld and Sakuntala. The field was bunched at the live where Sakuntala made a fast run to be in close attendance on Flying Ace and Night Foe as they ran to the straight. There were half a dozen with chances half way down the straight and Langue d'Or and Bruce were together. Langue d'Or never let up and for a moment he uppeared to be holding Bruce safe. However, when the southerner made his final elfort he quickly rau to the front and on to victory. The cheering started long before he reached the winning line. Sakuntala 's effort was a grand oue and she was only a short length away a short neek in front of Langue d 'Or. Night Foe was fourth, Broielield was fifth and next iu line were Royal Victor, Arco and Carnforth. A furlong froin home in the Railway Handieap Specialist looked a likely winner for he had gone to the front and appeared to have the upper hand. It was wide out that the last challeng,? was fired at him and it was ' frorn Karachi which finished with a brilliant run to win by a neek froin Specialist with Cot-case half- a length away only a ' neek in front of Flying Orders. Peter Gazclle was fifth after being last but one in the run to the eourse proper. Two furlongs from home Ivarachi was what could have been called a bad last.
Majesty and Sage King carried most support. iu the Thompson Handieap and Sage King was the winner from the Awapuni horses, Voltaic and Imperial. Running to the straight the order was Red Pickle, from Voltaic, Opulent, Gay Stroller, Trcasure Tee and Sage King. They were not far into the straight when Sage King moved up to take 011 Voltaic, which was going strongly in front. Half a furlong from the line Imperial dashed out of the ruck and was going so brilliantly that he appeared eertain to catch the other twoi His run linished just short of the post and Sage King won by half a length from Voltaic with Imperial half a length further back. Matador linished vvell for fourth and the next home were Gay Stroller, Majesty and Yasda. After the race it was found that Imperial had been kicked at the barrier and that the services of a veterinary surgeon vvould be required. Lambro, trained at Wanganui, scored decisively in the Highweight after Royal Flash had led into the •straight from Foxada, Village Squirc, Rotlinic and Master Raymond. The placed horses were not in the picturc until heads were turned for home and Lambro won easily by threo lengths from Master Peter a length in front of Merger. Marshall Oook was fourth. Niloch, ' trained at Takanini, was never headed in the Plunket Nurscrv and the only serious challenge came from Ivartikeya, the Riccarton colt. To the course proper the order was Niloch, from Vakura, Aratuclcy and Sweet. Nvniph. In the last furlong Ivartikeya challenged Niloch and had him doing his best to get the decision by half a length. Sweet Nymph was three lengths back followed home by Vakura, Ladv Vite and Aratuek.y.
Desert Fox and Indian Dawn wgre the favourites for the St. Leger and Desert Fox won decisively from Perfect , I'eace and Keening. Fine Flavour set the pace for nearlv a mile and a-half and it was at the home turn that Desert Fox took over. He was under the whip in the straight but was never in danger and he won as he liked from Perfect Feace which beat Keening just as easily. Flare Path was first choice for the Tinakori Hack Handieap but he linished fifth, the winner being Revolte from King's Ransom and Ngakoti. Five furlongs from. home Theioway was leading froin King's Ransom, Revolte, Flare Path, EUa Shields, Sea Furv, Flying Dink and Gynee Lou. There was little change until well into the straight when Revolte went past King's Ransom to win by the best part of a length. Ngakoti finished well to get third money four lengths back. Ella Shields was fourth and Flare Path and Broilyn were next. Sheilwyn was favourite for the concluding event. She was last early, she was never closer to the rails tKan about four horses out, and she was in front running to the straight. She did well to run fifth. Cock Robin made the pacc early and he was half a dozeh lengths clear of The Saddler, Blue Moon, Baleherrie and Omaio at the mile. Blue Moon and Sheilwyn led to tlie straight where Baleherrie finished fast to beat Blue Moon by a long neek. Lady Welbeck was over half a length back followed - by Queen's General, Sheilwyn, Gyration and Omaio. The day was fine, tahere was a large attendance and the totalisator handled £171,975 10s (win £82,227 10s, place £89,748) compared with £185,129 10s last year. * 1 RIMU HIGHiyEIGHT, £600; f I mile 3 furlongs. 4-4 LAMBRO, 30.4 (R.
