Persona! Mr. Ned Birch, formerly of Shannon and now of Palmerston North, spent yesterday in Shannon looking up old friends. The Mayor. of Foxton, Mr. H. H. Podmore, and the town clerk, Mr. Wm. Trueman, left on Monday to attend the Municipal Conference at Rotorua. Shannon has not sent representatives. Dr. L .N. Loomis, the local veterinary surgeon, has relinquished his position with the Shannon Dairy Company and intends leaving with Mrs. Loomis for Australia in the near future. The veterinary club will be without the services of a surgeon for the time being. Euchre Prize-Winners Prize-winners at the euchre tournament, held in Laurvig's Hall on Friday evening under the auspices of the local branch of the New, Zealand Labour Party, were Mesaames B. Coulter and A. Richards and Mr. W. Radford. Speedway Successes The Foxton speedway rider, W. Byne, met with further successes at the Palmerston North fixture last Saturday evening, winning the first of a series of races for standard machines. T. O'Leary and M. Read, of Foxton, also competed. Fish. Plentiful Flounders are reported to be plentiful in the Manawatu River at present. Fishermen operating near the mouth have been hampered of late by the presenc of jelly fish, and one set net was damaged by the weight of them last week. Some measuring about eighteen inches across had trailers feet long. Carnival Shop Days At a meetmg of the Shannon Borough Council on Tuesday evening it was agreed to grant each committee in the forthcoming Fire Brigade Queen Carnival one street day each. The decision was reached following a discussion on the granting of a permit to the Maori Queen Committee to hold a shop day on Thursday, April 3. The request was granted. Plunket Baby Carnival A further nrogress report in the voting in the Plunket Society's baby carnival was issued yesterday. There is no great change in the position, the top numbers being the only ones altered. The position of the entrants is now as follows: — No. 11 (Wendy Wishart) 1, No. 5 (David Bateman) 2, No. 17 (Dawn Easton) 3, No. 24 (Stewart McDonald) 4, No. 4 (Helen Tremewan) 5, No. 6 (Bruce Small) 6. Farmers' Queen Shop Application , was made by the. Fairmfers' Queen Cbmmittee to the Shannon- Borough Council iat its meeting on Tuesday evenihg, toopen a shop for four days during the running of the Fire Brigade Carnival. The town clerk (Mr. J. T. Bovis) advised that the council had no control over the opening of a shop in private premises, but the committee could not canvass the streets.
