THEFT OF AVIATION OIL

PALMERSTON, March 5. WTilliam Allan Cooksley Fitzsimons, an airman, agcd 22 years, stationed at Ohakea, appcared in the Magistrate's Court yesterday before Mr. C. C. Marsack, S.M., and pleaded guilty to a charge of having stolen a 45-gallon drum of aviation oil valued at £21 9s, the property of the New Ze aland Government, Air Department. He was convicted and admitted to probation for two years. Senior-Detective O. Power, said Fitzsimons was attached to the equipment section and at times he was required to drive a truck. He had been approached and asked if he eould get some oil and, later, when bringing empty drums into the city, he had loaded one full one which he sold for £8 16s. This drum was delivered to the buyer and accused received a cheque in payment for it. Detective Power added that there had been a shortage of oil at Ohaketa and that the shortages had been a matter for •^erious concern. He also explained that . accused's record since he joined the Air Force in 1944 had been good. Mr. A. M. Ongley, who appeared for Fitzsimons, stressed this point when asking for leniency. The oil was recovered untouched ahd the Magistrate. giving his decision, said it appeared tc be a case for probation.
