Personal. ^ , Mr. and Mrs. W. Morton, who have been on holiday in the North, have returned to Otaki. . Arrangements are now being made for Mr. lnia Tewiata, the talented Maori singer, to give concerts in the South Island. The many friends of Mrs. F. A. H. Neate will regret to learn that she is at present a patient in the Amara Private Hospital, Levin, where she is -undergoing treatment. Mr. and Mrs. E. N. Johnson/ at one time residents of Otaki and now of Christchurch, are among uhe visitors at the present time., They return home at the weekend. Licensing Bench The next quarterly meeting of the Otaki Licensing Bench will be held at Levin Courthouse at noon on February 14. Vital Statistics Fcr the monbh of February vital statistics in Otaki were: — Births: European 9, Maori 5. Deaths: European one, Maori one. There were no marriages.
Methodist' Building Fund As a result of the special collections taken up in connection with the Otaki Methodist diamond jubilee celebrations last weekend, the new church building fund will benefit to the extent of about £100. Band Display On Sunday next at the Otaki Domain there will be an outstanding musical attraction for residents of the town and district. Five bands in all will b.e in attendance and render a programme. of selected music. lnia Tewiata Fund The following additional donations have been recived . to this fund: Previously acknowledged £102 6s, Anonymous £1, patron, officials and members of the Otaki Maori Racing Club £25. The total is now £128 6s. f> Student Retreat For two days last weekend the executive of the Victoria University College Student Christian Movernent held a confereiice and retreat at Paekakariki. The main purpose ' the conference was to pian and discuss the activities of the movement in Wellington during the com;ng year. Church Donations As the result of a special "offen fcory at the Anglican Church, Paraparaumu, the sum of £8 18s was collected for Maori missions and at Otaki £1 10s lld. Contributions per he Rev. Paora Temuera -totalled £10 4s 5d. In the Advent appeal Otaki raised £8 6s 6d and Levin £13 0s 6d. Maori Performers Some ihirty young Maoris, under e'uidance of Miss Hohipuha, gave an exhibition of dancing, witn \ction songs, at Raukawa on Monday night, and acquitted themselves in such a manner that there is now a move to form a club for the benefit of the young people, so that they may be taught some of i9 old Maori , customs. At one ime there was a strong, ciub tocally, when much enjoyment was lerived, and it is likely that Mrs. Te Hana will again be prominent iri giving tuition.
