NATIVE FLORA CLUB MEETS

VISIT TO RESERVE DESCRIBED A meeting of the Levin Native Flora Club was held recently, the president Mr. I. D. Parsons being in the chair. The club arranged to invite the members of the Wellington Botanical Society to. Levin to parricipate in an outing on some date to .be arranged later. The next club outing will be to some swamp forest at Poroutawhao ©h March 9/ Those attending will be required to meet at the Levin Post Office at 10 a.m. The next meeting will he held on March 29. when the guest speaker vill be Dr. G. Cone, of Wellington. The secretary described a visit to a private reserve of typical coastal forest situated between Waikanae and Paraparaumu. Trees such as Kohekohe, Wharangi, Karaka, Ngaio and Heketara were typical representatives of such coastal forest, but many other species were noted, and a list of over 100 different species of ferns and the higher orders of plants was compiled. As stock are allowed access to the bush, little or 110 regeneration of forest trees was noticed. This -is all the more to oe regretted-, as the hillside is stony and very steep. Apart from its beauty the bush performs a useful function in holding the hillside intact, erosion being "noted on the open hill adjacent.
