3-MILE RECORD BROKEN

Impressive Performance at N.Z. Championships AUCKLAND, Feb. 28. One New Zealand record, that for the three-mile walk, was brokeu when five championship events and the heats of several others were decided in the lirst day of the New Zealand Amateui Athletic Championships.

Tlxree of last year's ehampions, aii of them from Auckland, retained theii titles. A. E. Redmond, who represented Wellington last year, retained the discus tlirowj W. Heron, of Papakura, had no diliiculty with the pole vault, and P. V. Goddard by a matter of one inch retained the broad jump title in that kind of disappointing exhibitiop which seems to dog the event at a nationai championship meetings Easily the most impressive perform ance of the day was furnished by the winner of the three-mile Wallc, R. Lamberton, of Feilding, who reduced the present record by 15 3-5 seconds, although in a performance a week or two ago he returned even lower ligures for which an applfcation for a record has been made. Ii. H. Agate (Auckland), the titleholdcr, was beaten by inches by P. J. Kheerin (Wellington) in the first heat of Ihe 100 yards champioifthip, but he qualilied comfortably enough for the linal. The winner of the second heat. i). R. Batten (Canterbury), shaped as the threat of the field by his convincing win in even time from R. Mherborne (Wellington). In this heat C. Alasters, former Second N.Z.E.F. champion, obtained a most brilliant start aiul at 50 yards was two yards clear of the field bnt he could not foot it with either Batten or Sherborne iq the run from there to the linish. j Agate had no diliiculty whatev'er in winiiing his heat of the 220 yards, oi which he is also the titleholder. For the last (30 yards of the race he moved at about threequarter pace, and Batten who was lying second as they straightened for the linish was also content to lope along. Bheerin won the second heat from K. O. Plunkett (Canterbury) who headed M. Hourigan (Wellington) just before the linish. Two heats of the 440 yards were run as there were only three starters in each. Neither D. M. Harris, the defending titleholder, nor J. C. .Grierson (Auckland) whosc performances entitle him to second ranking to Harris among the New Zealand middle distance men, was troubled to win his heat. The heats of the 120 yards higli hurdles and 200 yards low hurdles were run off and J. Al. Holland (Auckland) who last Saturday broke the New Zealand quarter mile low hurdles record, looked most impressive in winning his heats in each. .So too did A. R. Eustace, the defending titleholder.
