13-YEAR-OLD BOY DOUBLE B CHAMPION
WANGANUI, Feb. 28. A boy of 13 years won the double B flat bass solo at the afternoon's band contest session. He was D. B. Dewe, of the Feilding Municipal Band, and gave a fine performance indeed. The placings were: D. B. jDewe (Feilding Municipal) 49, 1; M. A. Connors (Wanganui Garrison) 44, 2; K. E. Oliver (Ashburton Silver) 43, 3; W. Deere (Christchurch Municipal) 42, 4. The C grade own choice band eliam pionship test was piayed tonight on Cook's Gardens, and resulted: Hawera Municipal Auxiliary, 147 points, 1 ; Crichton Cobbers (Toe H) of Christ cliurch, 143 points, 2; Auckland City Boys, 142 points, 3; Wellington Boys Institute, 140 points; 4;> Rangiora Brass, .137 points, 5; Patea Municipal, 135 points, (5. >Six bands competed. F. O. Bkoglunc; . Wellington. He said rules were rulos and had to be observed. That was so in other compctitive fields. The subject was raised at the annual neeting today of the Neiv Zealan .irass Bands Associalion. The delegates vho protested about the disqualifieation mid that if the bands had not observed the rules they should not liave been allowed to piay. Wliat did happen was that they were allowed to play bui got no niarks on the score slieet. A suggestion was made to the executiv>' that it-seleet say 50 hymns from whic'n the bands can make their own choice and so save confusion. The confcrenee instructed the exeri tive to endeavour to afrango a Do minion contest for junior bands in thc Sejttcniber school liolidays anuually. The remit camo from the Wellington Watersiders Silver Band which urged that the contest be hehl during thc school liolidays os that young bandsmei would not lose school timfe. Thc 1948 New Zealand brass bands contest will be hehl in Dunedin. This was decided at the annual nieeting of the New Zealand Bands Association here today. Thc only new oflicers are Messrs Bclgrave anii Trcwhheela. klr. II. ■ Gladstone llill (Plimmerton) was proposed as president but II r. Bkoglund was reelected by a large niajority in the ballot.
