Last year Denmark exported some 45,000 tons of butter to Britain and hopes that her exports this year may reach '70,000 tons. A Washington report that the British G-cver.imeiit inlends to make large purchases of dairy produce in America is denied in London. It is stated that during the war the United States Department of Agriculture procured food for -the British Ministry of Food. America now wishes to return to private trading and any Bri- . tish purchases made in. America in future will be by the Ministry of Food witliout the cojlaboration of the Department of Agriculture. Mr. J. W. Rodden, Director of the .Milk Froducts Division of the Ministry of Food, Js now in America to make new arrangements and endeavour to obtain such supplies of cheese, evaporated milk and milk powder as may be available. A complaint that there was a lack of variety in cheese in Britain and •the majority was Dominion or American Cheddar known as ' ' mousetrap ' ' was made in the Commons by the Conseryative member, Mr. Teeling, this week when moving the annulment of control of the maxinuun price order for cheese. He asked why Britain could not import more palatable cheese from abroad. Dr. Edith Summerskill, replying, said the Ministry's function was not to pander to acquired tastes but to ensure that those who had npt time to acciuire those tastes had suitable food. What had been deplorably called "mousetrap" cheese had the same nutritional value as the others.
