Received Thursday, 10.5 p.m. SYDNEY, Feb. 27. In swift aetion today Customs officers seized 50,000 cigarettes as they , wero about to be removed from-the- liner Taiping berthed at Cireular Quay. A mem- . ber of the Ship's crew was apparently working in liaison with the people ashore. Customs investigators are trying to trace "a taxicab which raeed away from the whar-f as the ffrst seiz- 1 ure was made. The cigarettes, which wero of ffrst: class American brands, wero coneealed beneath earth lo.aded as ballast. Cus-i toms officers saw six hessian bags lying1 alongside the ship. The bags contained 144 cartons of cigarettes. More - bags eontaining 06 eartons were found on the deck later.
