| Service Pay Rates ! Tliere is activity in service cir- \ cles which suggests it may not be long before new pay rates for the ' three seryices are armounced. It is' understood these rates, compiledwith a keen regard for the wages to be earned in industry these days, may be instrumental in giving a decided fillip to perman'ent army recruiting. The basis of calculation is believed to have been what a man might reasonably have' earned as a civiliah, reduced by the' price of his keep and clothing, and a balancing up of cofnparable trades and ranks in the' three ser- ; vices. Two Years' Borstal1 Appearing before the' Children's' Court at Palmerston North yester--day a youth admitted four charges' of assaultihg small giris. It wa-s stated by SeniOf Detective O. iPower that the youth had on several occasions picked up a youp'g girl, taken her on his bieyeie to ' some park, giveif her an ice crbam and assaulted 'her. NO serious harm had been- done to any of the girls, but it iXras apparent that if the youth Was not restrained, there would be serieus- resul'ts. The Magistrate committed ■ the youth to the Borstal institution for two years. Library Has Quiet MonthWith the fine weather coinciding with the holiday1 period', there has been a slackeni'ng in the desire for books this moiith, according to the librarian; Mrs. M. Whitaker, in her report to the Borough Council. Light fiction has been mostly in demand. Books issued during the month totalled 5929, comprisihg 5338 fiction, 274 non-fiction and 317 junior. In the Country Library section, 371 books were issued compri'sing 178 fiction, and1 198 non-fiction.
