On the ordcrs of President Truman, a surgcon is flying from Louisiana to New York to operate on a singer who has been hiccoughing for six weeks. She is Anna Mayer (23), and only an emergen,cy operation can save her life, it is. feared. The surgeon is Dr. Lester Samuels, employed by the War Veterans' Administration, who partially cured Miss Mayer by operation for similar seizurcs three years ago. At that time the hiccoughing lasted 47 days. The present attack is much more serious. She is now hiccoughing at the rate of oncb every three . seconds, her weight has fallen from 112 to 801b.. and she has not slept for over a week. Last week she sent a personal appeal to Mr. Truman, asking hirn to release Dr. Samuels to treat her. The President decided to inter-' vene, but it took four days to locate Dr. Samuels, who was on holiday.
