BUCKLEY DRAINAGE BOARD

DRAINAGE SCHEME ATPROVM) A meeting of tlie Buckley Drainage Board was held in the Council Chambers, Shannon, on Wednesday evening. Trustee R. J. Law presided and those present were Trustees R. A. Speirs, H. C. Easton and W. C. Higgie. The engineer to the board, Mr. H. R. Farquhar, communicated with the trustees in connection with the proposed Buckley drain improvements, and enclosed a list of-ten-ders which had been received to carry out the work. Of the four tenders received, the engineer recommended that that of Messrs. Arthur Sawyer and Co., Ltd., be accepted. Mr. Farquhar also advised that the tender had been submitted to the Public Works Department for approval! An early depision was requested as the tenderer was prepared to commence work in ten days. It was pointed out that the contract was for earthwork only, and did not include removal or re-erection of fences or bridges. The engineer asked that the landowners concerned be notified accordingly, so that they could make the necessary arrangements for removal without delaying the dragline. Ratepayers in the Buckley subdivision, Messrs. S. J. Richardson, W. C. Higgie, L. J. Bowler, W. H» Roberts, G. W. Johnston and F. J. H. Johnson, Mr. A. S. Easton trepresenting the Easton Estate) , Mr. A. E. 'Burling (representing Bryant Brothers) , and Mr. N. A. Shailer (representing Tay'lor's Estate) waited on the meeting when the chairman explained fully the proposed scheme. On the motion of Mr. F. J. H. Johnson, it was agreed that the '•atepayers present approve of the •scheme as submitted by the engineer, with a request that the board proceed with the work immediately. It was decided ..that the finance be arranged by rating by a petition signed by ratepayers in accordance with Section 2 of the Land Drainage Amendment Act, 1913, A proposal put forward by Mr. G. W. Johnston was 'carried that the meeting of ratepayers in the Buckley sub-division request the board to instruct the engineer to bring down a pumping scheme for the Buckley area.
