FIRST MEETING SINCE DAYS BEFORE WAR WELLIN CrTON , Feb. 20. Riflemen throughout New Zealand who gathered today on the Trentham rahge for the first national ineeting since :1939, had dull weather with lighl rain to contend - with When shootmg = began. ' The afternooft ; was cloudless and the light good but a real Trentham lish-tail wind worried the marksiueu. The day was deyoted to two opening uiatches ncither of which counted for ihe chanipionship. lu t)he miorning, the range's were 300, 500 and 500 yards and in the afternoou the range was 800 yards. ' One of the features was the suecess of two B grade riflemen, the morniiig inatch being won by A. H. Russell f Opaki), and- the afternoou inatch b> A. F. Pavnter (Blenheim). Their suecess should emphasise tlie vaiue oJ ineetiug in standardising gradiug. Despite misty conditions m the morn mgs at the shorter ranges, several pos sibles were returned niainly at 500 yards, those achieviug this being Russell Bimmonds (Auckland City), Lumsden (Heutere), Ford (Invercargill), Wrigley (Opaki), Franklaud (Karori), A'hitehead (Cheltenham), Gordon (Okawa), Jones (Ashhurst), Jeuue (Gisborne) and TreveJyn (duburbs).
