PcrsonaL Mrs. V. J. Bateman and family returned home on Monday evening after spending a holiday .at Waitarere Beach. Mrs. Stratford, *'of Dannevirke, is spending a holiday with her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Tim Stratford, Plimmer Terrace. Miss Jean Cameron, of the local railway station staff, has recommenced her duties after spending her annual leave in Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. Colin Mortimer, who have been the guests of Mrs. Mortimer's mother, Mrs. L. Pigott, Vance Street, have returned to their home at Napier.

Recent visitors to Shannon were Mr. and Mrs. G. Burke, of Wellington, who were looking up old friends in this district. During their stay here they were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Henshaw, of Pretoria Road. Flounders Plentiful i Local fishermen have reported excellent catches of flounders at the Foxton and Waitarere beaches recently. Late last week a party from Shannon seeured a catch of over 100 fish within a few hours. R.S.A. Bowlers TJnsuccessful A rink of Shannon bowlers . representing the Shannon R.S.A. took part in the Digger's tournament at Palmerston North over the weekend, but were unsuccessful in the finals. They were Messrs. R. Hook, V. J. Bateman, T. Bell and J. T. Bovis. Minor Epidemic During the past week quite a number of people have been on the sick list in Shannon, many suffering from that unpleasant illness known as "devil's grip." Although the illness is of short duration it leaves the patient in a weak condition for some days. Plunket Carnival The secohd progress report in the Plunket Society's baby carnival was published yesterday. It is as follows: — No. 5 (David Bateman) 1, No. 11 (Wendy Wishart) 2, No. 17 (Dawn Easton) 3, No. 20 (Beverley Robinson) , 4, No. 2 (Josephine Batt) and No. 22 (Bruce Small) 5 (equal) . The next progress report will be made on Friday. School Picnie ""71 j A special meeting of the Shannon School Committee was held on Monday evening, when final arrangemcnts for the forthcoming school picnic at Foxton Beach were completed. Mr. Jeffrey presided over a full committee. Arrangements for the transportation of the children and their parents to and from the beach pfesented quite a problem, but a satisfactory system has now been arranged. It was decided that a charge of 2s 6a would be made for the ad-ults' return fare.
