MILLION PARCELS OF FOOD FROM DOMINION

"During 1946 New Zealanders sent .almost d million parcels of food by posr Lo persons in Britain and other Euro pean countrios — a highiy creditable eirort," stated the Postnxaster-General, llon. F. Haclcett. "The 955,897 parcels sent weighed in the aggregate 6,419,000 pounds and, while the majority werfe for the United Kingdom itself, an.appreciable number 'were addressed to European countries, principallj' France, Beigium, Netherlands, Yugoslavia, Gfefece and Italy. "Jt is interesting to note that, although in Octobor last the limit of weight for-.gift parcels for the United Kingdom was increased from 11 to 2'j. pounds, and the limit for food contained in any one parcel was raised from sevfen to 22 pounds, the avorage wciglit of each patcel increased by less than half a pound. The average weight is now seven pounds." The Alinister wrent on to say that with the recent restoration of the Service to Germany, Austria and Hungary, U was now possible to send parcels to all European countties except Albafiia, Bulgaria and Rumania. Apari from United Kingdom mails, this eonstituted the largest number of parcels sent to any one destination for the yhar. To Australia the number was 33,098, to the United St.ates^ 12,176, to Fiji 3735, and to Canada 3162. The total number of parcels despatched all dostinations was 1,074,062.
