Personal Mr. Allen Carter is at present in Shannon visiting old friends. Mr. E. J. Spencer, who is still in very indifferent health, is staying with his daughter, Mrs. Richter, Whatawhata, near Hamilton. Maori Queen Appointed The chairman of the Maori Queen Committee, Mr. V. J. Bateman, advises that Miss Dalla Ropoama has been appointed to represent the Maori Committee in the forthcoming queen carnival to raise funds for the Shannon Volunteer Fire Brigade. Shannon Stock Sale There was a small yarding of stock and a poor attendance of buyers at the Shannon stock sale last week. Woolly down crossbred lambs soid at from 14s -to 22s 6d each and Romney lambs, shorn, from 11s to 16s each. Wethers brought 31s 6d. A few cows, exdairy, realised from £4 to £7 5s each. There- was no bid for a pen of aged ewes. January Weather During the month of January rain fell on 17 days at No. 1 dam, Mangahao, and measured 14.32 inches. At Mangaore over the same period rain fell on 14 days and measured 4.23 inches. Temperatures recorded in the shade at Shannon during January were as follows, the figures in parenthesis being for January 1946: Highest day temperature, 84 degrees on the 29th (81 degrees on 14th) ; lowest day temperature, 61 degrees on the 9th (62 degrees on the lst) ; highest night temperature, 64 degrees on the 27th (64 degrees on the 27th) ; lowest night temperature, 42 degrees on the 7th (48 degrees on the 10th) ; average day temperature for January, 71.193degrees (1946 70.645 degrees) ; average night temperature, 55.129 degrees (1946 56.258 degrees).
